Update: Church and Virus

Pastor Michael

Dear Church Family,

I just wanted to touch base with you today with a few thoughts. First let me say we had a wonderful day of worship yesterday. It was a good and encouraging day, even if we did things slightly differently. You all attended well and rolled with the changes with joy. It truly gladdened my heart.

I wanted to let you know that we are monitoring the whole Coronavirus situation very closely. Since things change from day to day (and really hour to hour - Yesterday Gov. McMaster suggested limit gatherings to 100, then CDC today said 50, and as I am typing President Trump suggested 10!), leadership will be meeting a little later in the week to decide how we as a church will handle this whole situation for the upcoming Lord’s day, but please know we are talking daily and will update you as we can. I just came from a group of local pastors, and these are good, faithful brothers, and we were all sharing our thoughts, concerns, and ideas about this whole situation.

Please let me share 4 important things with you that you can do this week:

1) Pray: Pray for us (as we pray for you)! We desperately desire to honor the Lord and do His will. We love the church, meaning you all, and desire to serve you well. One thing all of those pastors and our own elders as well agree on is that these are uncharted waters for everyone. So we need God’s wisdom.

2) Stay: If you are over 65 or so, it would be wise to not attend our church functions till things are clear and maybe stay home or where you feel safe. We in no way want anyone who may be at risk to put themselves in that situation. While we don’t know what functions are going to look like for even this week, we want to encourage people to stay safe. That being said, there will be no normal Wednesday Men’s breakfast, since it is primarily attended by retirees.

3) Serve: If you are in a situation where you need anything due to this virus (or even other reasons), PLEASE reach out to us and we will help. For instance, if you don’t feel safe going to the grocery store or pharmacy, please contact me, one of the elders, or small group leader and we will make arrangements to get you what you need. Also, be the eyes and ears to check on people. Small group leaders, be in contact with your people, especially those older, to make sure things are ok and to even give some encouragement.

4) Support: We realize that not everyone is going to agree or even like what we decide and how to proceed, though I believe the vast majority will. What I am asking is that you understand our heart for you, the church, and know we care about you and do not take any decisions lightly. We are exploring every angle. Some things we have to consider are biblical mandates, spiritual health of our people, physical health concerns, loving our neighbors, guidelines, reports and even mandates of government and health officials, and even legal ramifications. We are investing a huge amount of time to prepare to serve and honor Christ the best way we can. We will give an account for every person in our care. So we ask you support - and I am confident you will do that. So let me thank you in advance. It means a lot.

Having said all these things, please know the church is in no danger. Jesus said HE will build His church and the gates of hell cannot overtake the church (Matthew 16:18). So what we have going on is temporary and ultimately know that we the church will grow stronger through it. I would encourage you to find you hope in God and meditate on His word!

I suggest reading and meditating on Psalm 103 and the goodness of the Lord - Psalm 103:1–5 (ESV)1 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5 who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or one of the other elders and we’ll be glad to help in any way we can. May the Lord be with you today!

In Christ,
